Demwe HEP is part of Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit river cascade development scheme. Lohit is one of the major tributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra that flows through India’s verdant North-East region. The Run-of-the-River Demwe Hydro Electric Power Project is being developed in two stages with a generation capacity of 1,750 MW (Demwe Lower) and 1,080 MW (Demwe Upper) respectively.The 1,750 MW Demwe Lower HE Project (using 5 turbines of 342 MW each and an additional turbine of 40 MW; peak power generation of 6,322 GWh of electricity in a 90% dependable year at 95% plant availability to the National Grid) is being developed and implemented by Athena Demwe Power Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for implementation of the project. Athena Demwe Power was formed by Athena Energy Ventures Pvt Ltd (AEVPL) pursuant to a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed by AEVPL with Govt of Arunachal Pradesh in July 2007. On the 29 th of March, 2010 Athena Demwe Power was converted into a Public Limited Company.The project will significantly enhance the quality of life of local people by way of development of infrastructure like roads and communications, availability of power for development of small / medium industries, employment generation and secondary benefits like boost to tourism etc.
